Classic Contemporary Garden in Fulham

As both of the owners work full time, the main focus was to let the kids and their dog run loose amid a robust and low-maintenance garden.

It was essential to keep the garden all at the same level to maximise the space used for fitness, training and boxing.

As the client may decide to extend her kitchen side return in a couple of years, hard landscaping works around this area had to be kept to a minimum.

A pergola in the side return was merely installed to break up the long ‘corridor’ and to allow climbers to cover the neighbouring wall.

A bespoke Western red cedar fence has been put up all around the garden walls to add some privacy and to hide the fact the walls were not all of the same height.

Neat and smart planting

The client wished to have very neat looking plants without being too formal. She was also very keen on having standard bay trees as these reminded her of her family garden in Spain.

Hydrangea Annabelle were repeated around the garden for their large showy spherical heads. Not only do they make a strong presence in the summer, they also present interest in autumn and winter when they catch the frost and low winter sunshine. Artificial turf (Chelsea from Easigrass) was chosen for its low maintenance quality.

Lighting

Highlighting different parts of the garden with spike lights brought depth to the garden when viewed from the kitchen and from the dining room.

Uplighting the trees at the back of the garden added vertical emphasis and drama at night. The open habit of the Acer palmatum ‘Bloodgood’ allowed light to fully display the branch structure and to project the shadow onto the wall behind.

Contemporary Garden in Fulham

As both of the owners work full time, the main focus was to have an aesthetically pleasing low-maintenance garden.

The client wished to keep the paving area as it was so we decided to split the garden in two different areas : one for dining and one for relaxing.

A bespoke Western red cedar fence has been put up all around the garden walls to screen the existing brick walls and to bring a contemporary feel.

A floating bench made of western red cedar was fitted to enjoy the morning sun.

Low Maintenance Exotic Garden in Parsons Green

The owners of this property in Parsons Green were in the process of refurbishing their kitchen at garden level when they decided to redesign their outdoor space. Newly installed bifold doors open up onto the courtyard which becomes an extension to the kitchen in a seamless transition.

The outdoor area provides an attractive view from the kitchen all year round.

As both of the owners work full time, a low maintenance garden was essential. Maximising the space available for entertaining, reading and relaxing was also requested.

The outdoor space has been designed as an extension to the kitchen rather than a separate area.

The cantilevered bench made of boards from Millboard extends the floating bench built in the kitchen. It is wide enough to sit comfortably in front of the raised bed which is used as a banquette.

Thus, the external space operates as an additional living space as soon as the weather allows.

Large grey porcelain tiles in the kitchen are carried through to the outdoor space to blur the boundary between inside and out.

The dark grey rendered walls create a dramatic backdrop to the light green foliage of the plants.

Low Maintenance planting

The owners wanted an exotic Mediterranean garden. Having Agaves would remind them of their last summer vacation in South of France.

Hence, these drought tolerant plants became the limiting factor as they could only be planted in very well drained soil and combined with arids such as Yucca rostrata. The variegated Agaves in front of the grey walls are beautifully highlighted.

Euphorbia chamaerops var Wulfenii planted at the back softens the spiky texture of the higher planter, while Phoenix canariensis brings the height necessary to hide the awkward corner of the space.

The lower planter brings contrast with the coarse round leaves of the Bergenias and the evergreen grey green leaves of the Melianthus major.

Lighting

Spike lights highlight the striking palms trees ans agaves at night, while LED strips under the bench bring depth.

An outdoor heater has also been fitted to extend the time spent outside.

Coastal Garden in La Baule, France

This coastal garden is located 300 metres away from the seaside in a conservation area. The sloping garden under old maritime pine trees and in the shade of tall trees from the neighbourhood can be a harsh environment for many plants.

The owner of the property is a keen gardener and uses this property as a vacation home. Hence plants have to be of low maintenance with maximum impact in the summer and in the autumn when the family is on holiday.

Hardlandscaping

A marine stainless steel railing brings a contemporary feel on the terrace in keeping with the interior decoration and contrasts nicely with the architecture of the house.

Local boulders shape the garden with organic shapes and help to hold the soil at different levels.

The two young kids enjoy plenty of fun with the garden playhouse which has been painted in white and grey to match the facade of the cottage.

Shade and salt tolerant planting

Planting has been carefully chosen to resist shade, wind, salt and poor sandy soil which has been improved by compost. Also the sloping garden was a challenge.

Architectural Trachycarpus and Phormium bring height and structure to the garden all year round. A variety of grasses float with the breeze.

A parterre of white and light pink hydrangeas brings a flush of light in the shady area of the garden in the summer.

As the days shorten and temperature begin to drop, a selection of Japanese Maples suddenly erupt into an explosion of crimson colour.

An Outdoor Fireplace in Fulham

This small town garden (5 x 5 metre) was designed to extend the owner’s kitchen in a seamless transition.

Entertain by the fireplace !

The bioethanol fireplace is the centrepiece. As seasons change and days get shorter, the flickering flames of the outdoor fireplace give a warming and appealing atmosphere to the garden and these can be appreciated from behind the kitchen bifolds all year round.

The clean line of the built-in cantilevered bench adds to the contemporary feel of the patio.

Same porcelain tiles are laid inside and out to make the space feel bigger.

Lighting

Dramatic lighting is a key feature of this garden. Adjustable spike spots uplighting the trees and the brick wall, a LED strip under the floating bench all create an ambient glow.

Mediterranean Planting

The owner is very keen on gardening and asked for a great variety of scented flowers and colours.

Lush mediterranean planting softens the strong structure of the space.

The olive tree is underplanted with evergreen shrubs and perennials.

A rose and evergreen jasmine are trained to climb on the walls and are beautifully scented in the summer.

A small area of the courtyard was dedicated to the children for them to grow their favourite vegetables in timber boxes.

Simple Chic courtyard in Chelsea

Brief

The rear garden of this townhouse in Chelsea had been fitted out with stone slabs surrounded with very narrow borders for the planting. The garden being on two different levels, a pond had originally been built on the upper level and had then been converted to a storage area under a strip of decking boards.

After several attempts to remove the dirt  and grime from the slabs, the owner decided to give a fresh take to her garden to make it look greener and more natural with hardwood decking.

In the lower ground floor, bedrooms open up to the garden through large French windows. Garden can also be accessed from the kitchen via black iron stairs. As the full height glazing panels in the kitchen overlook the garden it was important that the aerial view provided interest at any time of the day, hence a subtle lighting scheme was introduced into the plans.

The planting brief was for different shades of green and texture to provide year round interest while keeping the maintenance as low as possible.

Solutions

Square Garden Design decided to widen the steps and centre them in front of the bedroom French window to open up the space, make it look bigger as well as less enclosed.

The client went for the extremely dense Ipe timber which is referred to as “ironwood” for the decking. Ipe is arguably the toughest available hardwood for the production of garden decking and is also one of the most attractive on the market given its grain swirl and highly sought after colour.

To keep the budget as low as possible, the IPE decking was laid above the existing stone slabs, using aluminium subframes fixed to pedestals above the existing patio.

The Ipe panel above the storage area was designed to look as seamless as possible. Struts fixed on either sides of the panels make them very easy to lift and to close back down. From now on, no effort is needed to access the storage boxes under the decking. The client seems to be using this available space more than before.

Retaining walls and risers of steps at the lower level are cladded with large format porcelain tiles in a bronze finish creating a dark backdrop to the planting in front.

Highlighting different parts of the garden with uplights brought depth to the garden when viewed from the kitchen above.

The forms, leaf shapes and depths of greens contrast well with the natural tone of the IPE decking. Dense planting bring a sense of abundance to the space and the great variety of plants bring interest all year round. Large showy white flower heads of the Hydrangea Annabelle lighten the space in the summer while the Japanese maples steal the show in autumn with their orange and red foliage.

Clump forming bamboos provide height and screen the boundary wall with the neighbour all year round.

Scandinavian inspired sofa and chairs complement the indoor furniture and create a lightweight appearance in the garden.

The whole giving the garden a refined and cosy atmosphere where the client can relax and entertain with friends.

Contemporary Garden in Barnes

The owners of this house in Barnes were undergoing very sophisticated building works to their interior. They thought it was the appropriate time to bring their back garden up to the contemporary standard of the interior and better link the two areas in style.

The owners have been seduced by a striking cantilevered structure seen at The Chelsea Flower Show. Such a feature was to become the main focal point of the garden.

Clean lines, minimalism and simplicity were the keywords behind the design, as well as functionality and elegance.

Good size areas to entertain and relax were essential while providing enough space for their children to play ball sports was probably as important to them.

Before the foundation works began, the owner asked for an underground rainwater harvesting system to be installed.

The garden is divided into fit for purpose areas.

Morning gym is permitted near the garden gate. A TRX suspension trainers has been fitted to the wall, while the kids can enjoy playing basketball with a portable, freestanding net.

THE DINING AND ENTERTAINING AREA

The bespoke cantilevered pergola cladded in Accoya gives the garden a very contemporary feel. The horizontal beams are 5.5m to 7m long and incorporate some recessed LED downlights above the dining table and the bar. It provides the shade the clients required for their entertainment space.

A bespoke designed, flamed granite clad, cantilevered BBQ and bar complement the dining area.

Recessed lighting in the beams and at the base of the uprights of the pergola as well as outdoor heating allow for extended use in the evening and throughout the year and create an inviting atmosphere at night. LED strip lights fitted under the bar give depth at night.

BESPOKE SLATTED FENCE AND GARDEN SHED

Boundary with the neighbour is screened with a bespoke slatted fence, all built in Accoya, a material with outstanding durability even in adverse weather. A garden gate is cut out in the slatted fence and the bespoke shed blends beautifully in the design.

All the joinery work was built in the workshop of Grovewood Joinery in Wembley.

“RIGHT PLANT, RIGHT PLACE” IN THIS CONTEMPORARY GARDEN

  •  Pleached evergreen trees create an effective screen to nearby houses and bring the height needed to balance the pergola.
  • The pale colour palette of the herbaceous perennials and the evergreen shrubs soften the strong geometry of the house and the garden structures.
  • Drought resistant planting along the south facing walls of the house.
  • Shady plants under the cherry tree and along the North and East facing walls.
  • A large artificial lawn provides a low maintenance area for the kids to play.
